Students at Grizzell Middle School accepted a challenge to be positive this week.

The middle school students on Sept. 26 took “Rachel’s Challenge,” a program named after Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine shootings.

Students sign a pledge to behave positively and encourage the same behavior in others. The program works to “inspire, equip and empower every person to create a permanent positive culture change in their school, business and community by starting a chain reaction of kindness and compassion,” as outlined on the Rachel’s Challenge website.

The objective for schools is to create a safe learning environment “by re-establishing civility and delivering proactive antidotes to school violence and bullying,” the website states.

This is the fourth year the school has taken on the challenge.

The Dublin Coffman High School marching band participated in the 36th annual Hilliard Band Invitational on Sept. 17 at Hilliard Bradley High School.

The band received trophies for Class AA Outstanding Auxiliary, and Outstanding Percussion and 2nd place. In overall competition for all classes, it won Outstanding General Effect and Outstanding Percussion.

The DCHS marching band’s 2011 show is titled “Tug of War” and features music based on Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries,” Dylan’s “Blowin' in the Wind,” and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture

The band has 220 members and is led by director Jeremy Bradstreet, assistant directors Wendy Reeves, Andrew Rice, Kevin Wallick and Nicole Gregio, and assistant director/percussion instructor Dan Hostetler.
