Cardinal Health is one of three employers in Ohio to be named a semifinalist for the 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.

The Dublin-based company, along with the city of Columbus and Young Truck Sales in Canton, were named semifinalists for the award given out by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense operational committee.

The award is the Department of Defense's highest honor for "employers that provide extraordinary support to their Guard and Reserve employees," a news release from the committee said.

The Freedom Award gives service members a change to recognize their employers for support of their service to the country, the release said.

"Employers selected as semifinalists assist Guard and Reserve employees through formal and informal initiatives, including setting veteran hiring goals, establishing military employee liaisons, providing childcare for deployed employees, arranging care package drives, and granting additional leave for military employees and family members before and after deployments."

The 2013 Freedom Award finalists will be announced next month as the pool across the country is narrowed to 30.

As many as 15 award-winners will be chosen early this summer and recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., in September.
