Three elementary schools get new leaders
Three new principals will welcome students to Dublin elementary schools this fall.
The Dublin Board of Education approved hiring the new principals April 23 as leadership from Deer Run, Glacier Ridge and Wright elementary schools leave at the end of the current school year.
"This is a great loss with great leaders leaving," Superintendent David Axner said, adding that the district is bringing in talented people to fill the three positions.
The candidates went though an extensive interview and screening process, Axner said, and were also interviewed over the phone by incoming Superintendent Todd Hoadley.
Brian Blum will leave his principal's position at Horizon Elementary in Hilliard to lead Wright Elementary. Principal Ali Moore is leaving Wright to work at a Dublin middle school.
Blum has held a leadership position at the Hilliard elementary school since 2011 and led Brown Elementary School, also in Hilliard, for eight years.
Dublin Director of Elementary Education Jill Abraham said Blum shows great passion for serving diverse student populations and has experience with ELL and special needs students.
"I very much look forward to developing relationships with students and their families at Daniel Wright Elementary," Blum said.
Peter Kurty will replace the retiring Karen Szymusiak at Glacier Ridge.
Kurty began his career teaching fourth and third grade before becoming an assistant principal in Columbus City Schools. For the past six years, Kurty has been principal of West Broad Elementary in Columbus.
"Pete is a passionate administrator," Abraham said, adding he is also the son of educators.
In Columbus, Kurty also helped open a STEM -- science, technology, engineering and math - school and provided STEM training throughout the district, Abraham said.
Working in a collaborative atmosphere is something Kurty said he's looking forward to.
"The staff and I will make decisions as if the children were our own," he said.
One of Kurty's children attends Dublin's Pinney Elementary School.
"Six years ago we moved to Dublin for the school system," he said. "It's the highest honor to bestow the education of my children to a school system."
Deer Run Principal Lorraine Rubadue is retiring and Susann Wittig has been hired to take her place.
Wittig, a Dublin graduate who attended Deer Run as a young child, comes to Dublin from New Albany where she was principal of the K-1 building.
Wittig also led Robert F. Schultz Elementary in Delaware for five years after teaching in Hilliard.
Abraham called Wittig a "technological wizard" and said she works to develop relationships between the school and community.
"I'm honored and privileged to return to Deer Run Elementary in a different role," Wittig said. "I look forward to continuing the excellence at Deer Run Elementary."
