Seniors Kaitlin Smith and Mark Widerschein won the 2013 Dublin Irish Festival scholarships for their volunteer work at the August event.

The Dublin Irish Festival Scholarship, which are $2,500 for this year's winners, is handed out annually to recognize two local seniors who have been involved in the community as DIF volunteers over the years.

Smith, soon to graduate from Coffman High School, began volunteering at the DIF at nine and won the "Best of the Fest" award her first year, a news release from Dublin said.

With plans to attend Ohio State University in the fall, Smith has also served the community as a volunteer for St. Patrick's Day and Independence Day events.

Widerschein, a senior at Bishop Watterson High School, has been an alter server at the DIF Sunday services and volunteered in the Wendy's Wee Folk and entertainer hospitality areas.

Widerschein received a "Best of the Fest" award in 2011 and plans to attend Miami University next year.

The Dublin Irish Festival will run Aug. 2-4.
