A Plein Air Art event Saturday, June 29, will kick off two weeks of local art in Historic Dublin.
The Dublin Area Art League will host the Plein Air Art event and work from league members will be on display at Historic Dublin businesses for the Art Stroll until July 13.
The Plein Air Art event challenges artists to create a piece of work in Historic Dublin in a few hours.
"The whole idea is to be interactive with the public so if somebody wanted to do a stroll from the library down to the Karrer Barn, they'll see most of the artists along there," said Bev Goldie, art league member.
Artists 16 years old and older can participate in the June 29 event in Historic Dublin, with registration from 9 a.m. to noon.
Artists then find a spot in Historic Dublin anywhere between Veterans Park and the Karrer Barn for inspiration and have until 3:30 p.m. to work.
"We just like to have people come out and paint casually," Goldie said. "It's daunting, but some people rise to the challenge because they like to be around other people and like when people ask questions ... .
"Plein Air is painting in its purest form," Goldie said.
"You form the initial impression and have to deal with the elements if it's hot, muggy, humid or raining, you make the art show that."
To enter the contest for judging, a $10 fee is required. Prizes will be handed out with $100 going to first place, $75 for second and $50 for third. Winners will be announced July 1.
A rain day for the Plein Air Art event has been slated for Saturday, July 6.
The pieces created at the Plein Air Art event will be hung in the Dublin branch library at 75 N. High St. and more than paintings will be accepted.
"Some people work in pastels or watercolors or pen and ink," Goldie said.
"I don't think we've seen anyone do charcoal before, but it's possible. We want to make sure people in all sorts of media feel comfortable."
The Plein Air Art event will kick off the annual Art Stroll, which will place the work of 12 Dublin Area Art League members at 10 Historic Dublin businesses.
Art will be displayed at Blankets and Booties, Timeless Skin Solutions, Our Cupcakery, Woodhouse Spa, BoHo Boutique, Z Bearla's, Winans Chocolates, Ha'penny Bridge Irish Imports, Edward Jones Investments and Starbucks Coffee.
"We have everything from wine and chocolate to Woodhouse Spa," Goldie said.
"It's elegant to casual and is fun for people who haven't seen some of these new shops to check them out."
Brochures with locations of all art and hours for viewing can be picked up at any participating business or the Dublin branch library, the Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau or Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
