The New Players Theater kicked off its third season Thursday, June 20, at the Mill Run Amphitheater, 3455 Mill Run Drive.
The troupe will perform William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew or Henry IV, Part I each Thursday (with the exception of July 4), Friday, Saturday and Sunday through July 28.
The theme of the 2013 season is "The Rowdy Ones," a reference to the primary characters in each of the plays, said Matt Hermes, marketing director for the New Players Theater.
"We chose this theme because the characters in these plays are kinds of rebels who break some rules," Hermes said.
Petruchio is the "rowdy" in The Taming of the Shrew, which will be performed the opening weekend, Hermes said.
"It's one of the more humorous plays of Shakespeare," Hermes said.
In Henry IV, Part I, the "rowdy" is Prince Hal, a young man who would rather indulge in vices than assume the responsibility of the throne.
The first performance of Henry IV, Part I will be June 27. For a full list of performance dates for each play, visit newplayers.org.
All performances begin at 8 p.m., with the amphitheater opening one hour prior to each show.
Patrons are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets, as well as picnic baskets and refreshments.
"We encourage people to bring blankets or chairs, and perhaps a bottle of wine and cheese," Hermes said. "This year, we also are inviting food trucks on select nights."
Red Snapper and Blu Olive are among the invited vendors.
Also new this year is a beer garden, available June 27-30 and July 11-14.
Admission to performances is "pay-as-you-will" upon arrival, Hermes said. Premium reserved seating is available for $20.
Parking is available at the Church at Mill Run adjacent to the amphitheater.
