Top 18 golf moments in city's history to be unveiled
The Coffman and Jerome High School golf teams stand among the golf legends such as Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods when it comes to Dublin's history.
State championships for local high school teams were included in the top 18 Dublin Golf Moments, which are set to be unveiled by the Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau starting Friday, Sept. 13, to countdown to the Presidents Cup event in Dublin Oct. 1-6.
The Presidents Cup will mark the play of a team of the best golfers from the U.S. against a team of the best golfers from throughout the world -- excluding Europe -- at the Muirfield Village Golf Club.
"We sent out a question to all the key golf experts and history buffs in Dublin," said Scott Dring, Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director.
"We asked Muirfield (officials) and people who have lived in Dublin for a long time," Dring said.
"We got 25 to 30 moments and then narrowed it to 18," he said.
"It was a group effort. It wasn't just us here at the bureau but golf aficionados across the city."
The top 18 golf moments included Jack Nicklaus' 1966 tour of land that would eventually become Muirfield Village Golf Club, Justin Leonard winning the USGA Amateur Championship in 1992, Europe defeating the U.S. team at the 1987 Ryder Cup at Muirfield and Riviera Golf Club opening in 1970.
Memorial Tournament wins by Tiger Woods, Roger Maltbie, Tom Watson and Paul Azinger are included, so is Coffman's first boy's golf state championship and the back-to-back state championship title won by the Jerome High School boys and girls golf teams in 2011 and 2012.
"That is unique because it's very rare that a girls and boys team not only win state championships, but back-to-back state championships," Dring said. "That's a pretty special feat."
Voting to put the top 18 golf moments in proper order began in early August and wrapped up Sept. 11.
Banners made for each moment will be unveiled today, Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Presidents Cup Plaza dedication at BriHi Square.
"At the Presidents Cup Plaza dedication we're also going to be recapping the top 18 moments," Dring said. "The Jerome girls and boys golf teams will be there. We'll be recognizing them as one example of great moments in Dublin history."
The order of the top 18 moments will be unveiled daily, starting Friday.
"On the 13th we'll officially announce it day by day, with (Sept.) 13 being the 18th moment," Dring said. "We're working down to the No. 1 moment announced on Sept. 30."
From Sept. 13-30, banners memorializing the top 18 golf moments will be unveiled at different locations around Dublin.
"Sept. 13 we'll be at the Dublin rec center," Dring said. "That banner will be displayed for the day at the rec center."
The announcements will be made each morning about 9 a.m. at public places throughout Dublin, including hotels, Historic Dublin and the municipal building, Dring said.
The banners for all 18 top Dublin Golf Moments will be displayed together in order during the Oct. 3 Fore!Fest on the Bridge Street bridge.
"It will be the entrance way to the whole Fore!Fest. People will cross the bridge and it'll be a main entrance point," Dring said.
