The Scioto High School Marching Band will embrace its Irish roots with its 2013 show.

With the show "The Parting of Friends: An American Wake," the Scioto High School Marching Band will tell the story of an early 20th century Irish immigrant.

The show is based on a poem by Barney Mulligan and a song performed by Mulligan's daughter-in-law Eileen Ivers, a world-renowned fiddle player.

A song featuring an electric fiddle will open the show and Sailing by Gavin Sutherland will follow. Fate and Destiny by Brave score writer Patrick O'Doyle follows and the band will play and sing The Parting Glass to end the show.

Marching Band Director Jim Gray said the show will celebrate the courage of Irish immigrants starting life in a new land and leaving their friends behind.

The Scioto High School Marching Band will compete in Ohio Music Educators Association contests in Licking Heights and Zanesville, as well as the Mid-States Band Association contest in Lebanon.

The marhcing band's goal is to make it to the OMEA state finals and MSBA championships later in the fall, Gray said.
