Traffic, parking plans set to handle large crowds
With several police agencies working together to keep the Presidents Cup safe, a large portion of their job will be traffic.
Thousands of fans are expected for the Presidents Cup that runs Tuesday, Oct. 1 through Oct. 6 at Muirfield Village Golf Club and although parking will be at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, getting people around Dublin will be a big concern for police.
"Traffic for us, as far as police presence is two-thirds (of the job)," said Dublin Police Lt. Steve Farmer, who is coordinating law enforcement for the event.
Fan parking is at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium where shuttles will take spectators to the fan experience village near the entrance to Muirfield Village Golf Club.
Farmer is expecting heavy traffic on Memorial Drive where people cross the road from the fan village to the Presidents Cup.
"There will be 20,000 people crossing the street," he said. "We'll stop traffic."
Other areas to avoid, Farmer said, are Sawmill Road north of Interstate 270 and Riverside Drive north of Hard Road as traffic goes to and from the Presidents Cup parking area at the zoo.
"At the peak time there will be 20 buses an hour (carrying fans to the Presidents Cup and back)," Farmer estimated.
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium parking lot could be especially busy Sunday, Oct. 6, because as Presidents Cup play wraps up and the closing ceremony is held at the fan experience village. Colo's Classic Car Show will also be held at the zoo.
"People should expect delays on Sawmill (Road), Riverside (Drive) and Powell Road," Farmer said.
Oct. 3 drivers should also beware in Historic Dublin as Fore!Fest closes portions of Bridge and High streets from 4 to 11 p.m.
For the free street festival, Bridge Street will be closed at Riverside Drive to Corbins Mills Drive and High Street will be closed between Indian Run Drive to the north and Waterford Drive to the south.
Historic Dublin employees and residents will be able to get home during the closures, but all other traffic will be prohibited.
Drivers will be directed to use Frantz Road, Emerald Parkway and Post Road during the closures.
Parking for Fore!Fest will be provided at Wendy's Corporate Headquarters, on Dave Thomas Boulevard; Metro Center, 500 Metro Place North; the former Digger and Fitch parking lot at the southwest corner of Tuller Road and Riverside Drive; and Cardinal Health, 7000 Cardinal Drive.
Shuttles will be provided to take people from parking to Fore!Fest.
