2014 Memorial Tournament

Dublin may reuse Presidents Cup initiatives

With the Memorial Tournament about two months away, Dublin officials are pondering the addition of a few new activities.

Dublin rolled out the red carpet last fall when the Presidents Cup was held at the Muirfield Village Golf Club, and city staff is considering revisiting a few activities held in honor of the international golf competition.

According to a staff memo to Dublin City Council members, the city could reuse banners of Dublin's Most Memorable 18 Moments in Golf and giant golf ball sculptures put around town before the Presidents Cup.

A leadership breakfast could also be added to the lineup.

The breakfast, held at OCLC the Wednesday of the tournament, would include "2014 Memorial Tournament Honoree Annika Sorenstam and other high profile business leaders," the memo stated. "Produced in cooperation with regional partners, including the city of Dublin, Columbus 2020 and the Memorial Tournament. This Leadership Breakfast will be similar to the one produced during the Presidents Cup."

The breakfast would cost the city no more than $7,500.

Staff is also looking into bringing back Fore!Fest and would have the help of another organization, possibly the Dublin AM Rotary, the report said.

The event could close Bridge Street to North Street and would be funded with corporate sponsorships and bed tax grant money.

City Councilwoman Marilee Chinnici-Zuercher expressed support for some ideas, but not others, at the March 10 council meeting.

"I wasn't expecting to repeat everything we did (for the Presidents Cup)," she said. "The Leadership Breakfast has great opportunity."

Fore!Fest 2014, however, did not receive Chinnici-Zuercher's support.

"I don't believe that Fore!Fest is something that should be repeated annually," she said.

The banners and golf ball sculptures are good additions, provided they are taken down after the Memorial Tournament, Chinnici-Zuercher said.

Other options proposed to further celebrate the Memorial Tournament included painting the Memorial Crest on Muirfield and Memorial drives, erecting signs on Interstate 270 identifying Dublin as home to the Memorial Tournament and renaming Bridge and High streets with the names of Jack Nicklaus and the 2014 tournament honoree.

The Memorial Tournament will be held May 26-June 1 at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
