Art will take to the streets in Historic Dublin Saturday, June 28.
The Dublin Area Art League will host a Plein Air Art contest from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, on the streets of Historic Dublin.
The competition, for artists age 16 and older, gives them a chance to work on a canvas outside using the backdrop of Historic Dublin as inspiration.
"Artists register on South High Street in front of the parking lot where Tehku (Tea Company) is," said DAAL President Kar Shepard.
"They register there and go off to wherever they would like to paint in old Dublin."
Entrants usually use oil paints, water colors and acrylics for the contest and Shepard said she loves to wander around and watch the artists at work.
"There's usually someone in the cemetery and on the corner of Bridge and High (streets)," she said.
"There are people that use the houses on South High Street. They're quaint and have interesting trim.
"It's a lot of fun to watch the painters paint," Shepard said. "They don't mind."
Entry into the contest is $10 and all artists must get a DAAL stamp on the back of the surface they wish to use during registration.
"It's open to all artists in the central Ohio area," Shepard said.
"It's not limited to our members and in fact, we've gotten members from people who decided to do the Plein Air painting and then join the Dublin art league."
After the works are completed, they'll be displayed in the Dublin branch library for two weeks.
Central Ohio impressionist painter Marsh Gingerich will judge the works with a $100 prize set for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third. Winners will be announced July 1.
The art can also be sold while on display at the library.
"We've had some sold even before they've been hung up," Shepard said. "Other people have had their work sold from the library."
Other artwork will be display elsewhere in Historic Dublin June 28 to July 12 with the Dublin Art Stroll.
Artwork by DAAL members will be on display at Oscar's, Sisters Sweet Shoppe, Mr. Sushi, Donatos Pizza, Thread, Blankets and Booties, Edward Jones Investments, Our Cupcakery, Z Bearla's, Winans Chocolates and Coffee, Ha'penny Bridge Imports and Ireland and Starbucks.
Maps of the Dublin Art Stroll locations can be found at the Dublin branch library, Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
