District offers summer writing workshop for kids

The Dublin City School District's Community Education program will offer a new writing workshop this summer based on the Percy Jackson books series.

Local writers Colleen D'Angelo and Linda Forte-Spearing will lead the workshop for fifth and sixth grade students that will run from 9 a.m. till noon July 29-31 at Bailey Elementary School.

Forte-Spearing has run other workshops in the school and is currently helping with a Harry Potter-based workshop at the Dublin branch library.

The new workshop requires students to read the first book on Percy Jackson by author Rick Riordan and costs $89.

"Kids love the books," Forte-Spearing said of the Percy Jackson series.

"Girls love them even though it's a boy protagonist. But almost more importantly, boys love them and it is really, really hard to keep boys in this age group engaged in reading."

The workshop will include mythical storytelling, creating a shield and sword for battle and competing in Greek Olympic games.

Students will also write their own quest for Percy Jackson, complete with monsters.
