Italian motorcycles, cars to be on display Sunday

By

Millions of dollars in Italian hardware will be parked for viewing on the grounds of Wendy's corporate headquarters Sunday, Aug. 31.

The Italian Gathering, a fundraiser for the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, will feature Italian motorcycles and cars not often seen on the road.

"You just don't see these cars anywhere else," organizer and owner of Evans Automotive, George Evans said. "They're very rare."

Automobiles from Alfa Romeo, De Tomaso, Ferrari, Fiat, Lancia, Lamborghini, Maserati, Pantera and other Italian manufacturers will be at 1 Dave Thomas Blvd. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Evans has a few of the Italian cars in his collection and said they often get spotted and reported through an online Columbus Exotics community when taken out.

"As value goes up these cars tend to get bought by private collectors," he said, adding they don't see much time on the road after that.

About 75 to 100 Italian cars are expected, including a 1990 Ferrari F40 that tops out at 201 mph. Another auto expected at the gathering is a 1987 Lamborghini LM002 that is a four-wheel drive V-12 all-terrain vehicle and a Lamborghini Countach.

"It's quite a show," Evans said. "For anybody into exotics, this is like heaven.

"You don't see these cars everywhere. ... Some of these cars have doubled or tripled in value. The Countach was $100,000 to $200,000 and now it's $500,000 to $1 million."

The cars on display at the gathering come from throughout the country.

"Last year the furthest guy was from (Washington) D.C.," Evans said.

"There are some local cars, a few from Michigan."

Even though the cars at the Italian Gathering are valuable, Evans said the event is very casual.

"It's real nice and laid back," he said.

"The car show started nine years ago. It's not white glove, just a lot of friends and anything Italian.

"The public comes through and we let them vote (on Best of Show)," Evans said. "There's traffic all day."

Admission for spectators to the event is free. Parking is $8.

Registration for an Italian vehicle is $35 and motorcycle or scooter registration is $25.

The event which benefits the Dave Thomas Adoption Foundation has in the past raised $15,000 to $20,000.

"It's a great cause," Evans said. "It's a really good show."
