Coffman will be challenged for OCC-Ohio championship
Dublin Coffman High School gymnastics coach Julie Kayser doesn’t need to see the district rankings to know which teams are the best in the area.
Many of them are in the Shamrocks’ league.
Five of the top eight teams in last week’s district coaches poll — Coffman (first), Grove City (third), Thomas Worthington (fourth), Olentangy (sixth) and Upper Arlington (eighth) — are in the OCC-Ohio Division and will compete in the league meet along with Hilliard Darby at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Coffman.
“The OCC meet is a great lead-in for the district meet (Feb. 25 at Worthington Kilbourne),” Kayser said.
“Our division will feature some of the top scoring teams,” said Thomas coach Marci Skeen, whose squad finished eighth (134.675) in the state meet last year behind sixth-place Kilbourne (136.225) and champion Brecksville-Broadview Heights (146.6).
The OCC-Ohio is one of three league championships that will be decided Feb. 11 at Coffman.
Delaware, Dublin Scioto, Hilliard Davidson, Kilbourne, Olentangy Liberty and Westland will compete for the OCC-Central title at 9 a.m. Big Walnut, Central Crossing, Dublin Jerome, Hilliard Bradley, Mount Vernon and Olentangy Orange will compete for the OCC-Capital title at 12:45 p.m.
The OCC-Ohio featured a competitive regular season, with Coffman and Olentangy tying for first at 4-1 and Thomas and Grove City tying for third at 3-2, followed by UA (1-4) and Bradley (0-5).
Thomas’ Leah Carloni (uneven bars, 9.25) and Tatiana Diaz-Packard (floor exercise, 9.3) and Olentangy’s Colleen McHugh (vault, 9.25; all-around, 35.9) all were ranked first in the Jan. 17 district honor roll.
Skeen doesn’t know if Carloni will be able to compete after breaking her left fibula during the McGee Invitational on Jan. 14 at Coffman.
Last year, Thomas won the OCC-Ohio, going 5-0 in dual meets to finish ahead of Darby (4-1), Olentangy (3-2), Coffman (2-3), Grove City (1-4) and UA (0-5) and placing first in the league meet with 133.575 points, ahead of Olentangy (132.55), Coffman (130.2), Darby (129.6), Grove City (128.95) and UA (120.675).
Skeen said her team doesn’t feel pressure to repeat as the league champion for the third consecutive year.
The championship is determined by a combination of regular-season duals and the league meet.
“The OCC meet doesn’t get you to the state meet,” Skeen said. “We aren’t going to be heartbroken if we don’t win it. We want our best day to come on Feb. 25 (at district).”
At district, the top three teams and top nine individuals in each event, including the all-around, will advance to the state meet March 4 and 5 at Bradley.
•Kilbourne will be competing for its third consecutive OCC-Central championship.
The Wolves finished the regular season 5-0 in the league, ahead of Liberty (4-1), Davidson (3-2), Delaware (2-3), Scioto (1-4) and Westland (0-5).
“Hopefully we’re going to have a good meet and finish near the top,” said coach Cindy Fushimi, whose team was ranked second and Liberty was ninth in last week’s district poll. “Liberty is going to be a strong contender in our division, but outside of that, I don’t know.”
The top OCC-Central performers in the Jan. 17 honor roll were Kilbourne’s Erica Rodriguez (first on balance beam, 9.1; second on vault, 9.125; tied for third on floor, 9.2; third all-around, 34.9) and Selena Fushimi-Karnes (tied for second on beam, 9.0), Liberty’s Jacklyn Hayes (tied for second on beam, 9.0) and Darby’s Nichole Norris (tied for second on beam, 9.0).
Last year, Kilbourne went 5-0 to finish ahead of Liberty (4-1), Delaware (3-2), Davidson (2-3), Scioto (1-4) and Westland (0-5) and then won the league meet with 134.975 points to finish ahead of Liberty (128.775), Delaware, 121.6), Scioto (109.625), Davidson (108.125) and Westland (70.5).
•Orange faces an uphill climb to repeat as OCC-Capital champions.
The Pioneers finished 2-3 in dual meets to trail Jerome (5-0) and Bradley (4-1). Jerome was ranked seventh and Bradley was 10th in last week’s district poll.
Last year, the Pioneers captured their first OCC-Capital title by going 5-0 in the regular season to finish ahead of Bradley (4-1), Big Walnut (3-2), Jerome (1-4), Mount Vernon (2-3) and Central Crossing (0-5) and then scoring 126.9 points in the league meet to top Bradley (125.675), Jerome (123.1), Big Walnut (122.675), Mount Vernon (109.275) and Central Crossing (36.175).
The OCC-Capital features returning individual state qualifiers in Bradley’s Vicki Horton, Big Walnut’s Natalie Mathews and Jerome’s Hannah Ruddle.
Last year at state, Ruddle finished 36th in the all-around (32.225) and 33rd on bars (8.0) and floor (8.15). She also scored 8.4 on vault and 7.675 on beam as part of the all-around.
On beam, Horton tied for 21st (8.6) and Mathews tied for 35th (7.6).
In the Jan. 17 honor roll, Bradley’s Ally Duckworth and Ruddle were tied for second on beam (9.0).
