Coffman advances five to district tourney
Five members of the Dublin Coffman High School girls tennis team advanced to the Division I district tournament on Friday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 13, at Hilliard Davidson, including one who won a sectional title.
Ashley Tan went 5-0 in singles in the sectional tournament Oct. 4 and 6 at Pickerington Central, beating Watterson's Courtney Brown 7-5, 6-1 in the championship match.
Also advancing in singles were Amber Lee, who went 4-1 and finished third, and Ash Thenappan, who went 3-2 and placed fourth. Lee defeated Thenappan 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the consolation final.
In doubles, Crissi Tzagournis and Annie Yang went 3-1 and placed third, beating Pickerington Central's Peyton Klein and Madi Schott 6-1, 6-1 in the consolation final, and Jessica Flynn and Nicole Talebi went 0-1.
The top four finishers in singles and doubles at each sectional advanced to district. The top four finishers in singles and doubles at district advance to the state tournament Oct. 19 at Ohio State and Oct. 20 at Davidson.
Last year, Thenappan went 2-2 and placed fourth at district before going 0-1 at state. Lee and 2012 graduate Meghan Letizia also went 1-1 in doubles at district.
Six Celtics advance to district tourney
Jerome had six players advance to district from the Davidson sectional.
Lauren Bellinger went 5-0 to win the singles title, beating teammate Rhiannon James 6-1, 6-3 in the championship match.
James went 4-1 and placed second and Sophia Gomez went 2-1 in singles.
Ellee Bullock and Caitlyn Merzbacher went 4-0 to place first in doubles, defeating teammates Emma Stein and Sarah Stein 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the championship match. The Stein sisters went 3-1 and placed second.
Last season, Bellinger and Sarah Stein went 4-0 in doubles to win a district title before going 4-0 to win the state title. Emma Stein went 3-1 and placed second in singles at district before going 1-1 at state, while Merzbacher went 1-1 and James went 0-1 in singles at district.
The Celtics defeated Upper Arlington 4-0 on Oct. 2 to improve to 19-0.
Irish fall short of reaching district
Scioto didn't have any district qualifiers from the Davidson sectional.
Competing in the singles event were Jessica Xu, who went 2-1, and Prachi Bansal and Susma Rai, each of whom went 1-1.
In doubles, Madha Choudhary and Karishma Patel went 1-1 and sisters Rathisha Pathmathasan and Cynthia Pathmathasan went 0-1.
The Irish were 9-7 overall before playing Big Walnut on Oct. 8 and Pickerington North on Oct. 9.
