Scioto boys in race for second

The Dublin Scioto High School boys basketball team found itself in a race for second place in the OCC-Cardinal Division entering play this week.

The Irish were 15-3 overall and 8-3 in the league before playing Hilliard Darby on Feb. 5. Westerville South also was 8-3. Westerville North led the league at 10-0.

Scioto's remaining league schedule includes a trip to Hilliard Bradley on Friday, Feb. 8, and a home contest against Worthington Kilbourne on Feb. 15.

Scioto's cold shooting Feb. 1 allowed Dublin Jerome to avenge a 63-33 loss Dec. 21, as the Irish fell to the Celtics 41-35.

The Irish were 11-for-42 from the field and 1-for-17 on 3-point attempts. They were outscored 8-0 in the third quarter after holding a 19-16 halftime lead.

Scioto rebounded with a 67-34 win over Jonathan Alder on Feb. 2. Guard Josh Ashwill led all scorers with 16 points and had 15 rebounds. Post player Zac Brown had 14 points and guard Antonio Bisutti added 12.

Girls team eyes second-place finish

Victories over Darby on Feb. 5 and Bradley on Friday, Feb. 8, would ensure Scioto second place in the OCC-Cardinal.

A 54-43 loss to Jerome on Feb. 1 dropped the Irish to 14-6 overall and 8-4 in the league. Westerville North entered play this week in first at 12-0. The Warriors defeated Scioto 55-33 on Jan. 25 and 63-44 on Dec. 14.

Jerome and Bradley both were a game behind Scioto at 7-5.

Scioto used a 7-0 third-quarter run to hold off Westerville South 41-36 on Jan. 29.

The Irish open the Division I tournament at home against Lancaster on Feb. 16. They are the 12th seed.
