Two members of the Dublin Jerome High School girls tennis team qualified for the Division I state tournament Friday, Oct. 18, at Ohio State and Saturday, Oct. 19, at Hilliard Davidson.
Sophomore Ellee Bullock and junior Rhiannon James both advanced in singles.
Bullock went 3-1 and placed third at district Oct. 11 and 12 at Davidson, beating James 6-1, 6-4 in the third-place match. James went 2-2, as the top four finishers in singles and doubles qualified for state.
"I'm very happy for both of them," coach Tyler Stephen said. "They played real well on Friday, especially Rhiannon. It was all about trying to control emotions and they were able to do that this past weekend. Taking two singles players through is very difficult and rare, and this is the first team I've ever coached that's accomplished that."
Last year at state, Bullock and former teammate Caitlyn Merzbacher went 2-2 and placed fourth in doubles.
Also competing at district were Maddy Easdale and Sophia Gomez, who went 0-1 in doubles.
The Celtics were 16-2 overall before playing Upper Arlington in a Division I OTCA district final Oct. 15. The winner will compete at state Sunday, Oct. 19, at Reynoldsburg.
Last year, Jerome beat Rocky River Magnificat 3-0 in a state semifinal before defeating Cincinnati Ursuline Academy 3-0 in the final to capture its second consecutive OTCA state championship.
