Despite competing without sophomore standout Shannon Downie, the Dublin Coffman High School gymnastics team defeated Upper Arlington 138.7-131.625 on Jan. 13 to improve to 3-0 in the six-team OCC-Ohio Division.
Junior Anna Pitts, who missed the first six weeks after having foot surgery, returned against UA.
Coffman scored a season-high 140.1 to beat league foes Grove City (133.0) and Thomas Worthington (125.85) on Dec. 18. The Shamrocks compete against league-foe Hilliard Darby on Jan. 29 in a home quad meet and complete league competition Feb. 3 against Olentangy in a home quad that was rescheduled from Jan. 7.
Downie, who hurt an ankle and foot in practice, is hoping to return for the 29th annual McGee Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 18, at Coffman.
The Shamrocks will be looking to repeat as champions after scoring 135.375 to win their second title in the event.
Also in the 14-team field are Jerome and Scioto, as well as Beavercreek, Chardon, Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, Chesterland West Geauga, Mayfield, Mentor, Olentangy, Thomas, UA, Washington Court House and Washington Court House Miami Trace.
There also will be representatives from 13 other schools that will not have full teams.
Joining Downie to lead Coffman in the all-around thus far have been junior Nicole Fusco, senior Claire Edwards and sophomore Alexa Markulis.
Jerome to be busy in OCC-Capital
Jerome, competing in the eight-team OCC-Capital, has a backlog of league competition after duals with defending champion Hilliard Bradley and Westerville Central were postponed Dec. 14 and rescheduled for Jan. 29.
The Celtics are 2-0 in the league. They compete Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Marysville and close league duals Feb. 1 against Olentangy Orange and Big Walnut at Central Ohio Gymnastics & Cheerleading.
Also competing Jan. 22 as non-league foes will be Coffman and Scioto. DeSales also will be competing Feb. 1.
Jerome's league wins were against Central Crossing (126.0-117.3) and Franklin Heights (126.0-51.45) on Dec. 7.
Scioto to wrap up league duals
Scioto is 1-3 in the six-team OCC-Central and completes league duals Monday, Jan. 20, against Olentangy Liberty at Central Ohio Gymnastics & Cheerleading. Big Walnut and Dresden Tri-Valley also will compete.
Scioto's league win was against Westland (104.55-95.4 on Dec. 18).
The Irish lost to Hilliard Davidson (116.4-100.6 on Dec. 9), Delaware (109.1-102.325 on Dec. 11) and Worthington Kilbourne (133.35-102.325 on Dec. 11).
The Irish, guided by first-year coach Erin Mulcahey, have been led by senior Monica Xu and sophomore Sonia Pattisam.
