The widening of U.S. Route 62 between Beecher Road and YMCA Place is on schedule to be completed this year, city engineer Karl Wetherholt said Monday night.

Wetherholt recommended to Gahanna City Council's service committee the approval of Columbus Asphalt Paving Inc.'s $1,325,800 bid as the lowest and best bid for the work. The company's headquarters is in Gahanna.

The committee agreed to forward the request to council.

The W.E. Stilson Consulting Group, which designed the proposed improvements, would get a $102,000 contact to perform inspections on the improvements, Wetherholt said.

The improvement includes installation of a center turn lane from Beecher Road to 300 feet north of YMCA Place.

The funding for the work would come from a combined grant-loan from the Ohio Public Works Commission. The city would be able to extend its bicycle-walking path to the YMCA and add a center turn lane for the businesses along that roadway.

The bicycle path would end at the YMCA, extending down from the roundabout at Morse Road and U.S. 62 to Pamela Drive. Wetherholt said that design, however, would leave about a mile-long gap in the bicycle path from the YMCA to Pamela Drive.

Wetherholt said he also intends to coordinate the construction with the YMCA to avoid interfering with its summer schedule.

In other matters during Monday's committee meetings:

The development committee heard a request to contract for $78,000 with Hull & Associates as the environmental consultant for the brownfield revolving loan fund. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would reimburse the city for the money.

Parks and recreation director Tony Collins announced that the Gahanna Parks and Recreation Department's landscape board is accepting nominations for 2009 Gahanna Landscape awards. The awards mission is to encourage the beautification of Gahanna by honoring residents and businesses with exceptionally landscaped properties and to encourage others to beautify and maintain their properties.

Deadline for nominations is June 26.

"We are excited to announce that this year's recipients will be recognized at the 2009 Service to the Community Awards event on Aug. 14, 2009," he said.
