The deadline is Oct. 9 to purchase a brick in the Gahanna veterans memorial and have it engraved with the name of the soldier it honors.

The installation of the bricks and the dedication will be held at the same time as this year's Veterans Day celebration: 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the veterans memorial in Veterans Park. It's at the end of Old Johnstown Road at Big Walnut Creek.

To date, more than 2,000 bricks have been placed in the memorial.

"This year's theme for the celebration is 'Year of the NCO,'" said Bob Fickle, a member of the Veterans Memorial committee. "It has been going on all year and there have been a number of other activities" to honor the noncommissioned officers of the services.

Ten years ago, a number of veterans wanted to start the memorial as a tribute, primarily to Gahanna-area veterans. It grew to include all veterans.

On Veterans Day, other activities will include a salute, laying of a wreath in the Big Walnut Creek and other activities.

In order to have a brick placed in the Veterans Memorial, the honoree must have served or be serving in a branch of the military service. If a former member, the person must have an honorable discharge.

Bricks cost $25 and each additional certificate for the brick is $2.
