The Taste of Gahanna is set for 6 to 9 p.m., Oct. 8 at the Aladdin Shrine Center.

In its 12th year, it is an event put on by the Gahanna Area Chamber of Commerce. Those attending get samples from Gahanna's commercial kitchens and also get entertained.

"We do our version of the 'Iron Chef,'" chamber president Leslee Blake said. Ten local chefs get a grab-bag of different ingredients, none known to him beforehand, and get 30 minutes to make something of it.

And what they make is always amazing, Blake said. "What they can come up with in 30 minutes ...."

This year's event promises to be an evening of fun, entertainment and a certain amount of social awareness.

"We're suggesting people come in costume or wear a mask and have a good time since Halloween is approaching," Blake said.

There will be a costume contest.

"The evening promises plenty of excitement, including unlimited signature samples from some of the best restaurants in the Gahanna area, door prizes and culinary competition," Blake said.

Local TV personality Lisa Colbert will be the celebrity host.

A panel of culinary judges will determine the Chefs Challenge winner.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 the week of the event and at the door and $10 for children 10 years and younger. Reserved tables are available and highly recommended. For tickets and additional information visit www.GahannaAreaChamber.com or call the Gahanna Area Chamber of Commerce at 471-0451.

"We are trying to be sensitive to the times," Blake said. "We are partnering with the Mid-Ohio FoodBank and they will have a presence there." Representatives of the food bank will be taking monetary donations and networking with the culinary community.

"They are having a tough time, too," Blake said. "We thought we would make people aware of their efforts."

"We're glad to have the opportunity to be in Gahanna for the Taste of Gahanna," said Evelyn Behm, vice president of strategic initiatives for the Mid-Ohio Food Bank. "The need for food has never been greater than it is now. We look forward to being there and letting people know about the services that Mid-Ohio Food Bank provides to families all over Central Ohio."
