The Gahanna Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) doesn't intend to move forward with particular marketing programs until after its budget is completed.

The CIC is a nonprofit organization formed under city legislation to promote "the industrial, economic, commercial, and civic development of a community or area."

"We can't move forward until our (fiber-optics network) contract is complete and our budgeting is done," CIC chair Andre Porter said.

The group already has contracted with Gahanna to lease six fiber-optics lines from the city over the next 15 years. The CIC is working with Columbus-based BlueMile Inc., a company that operates transport-fiber networks, to connect the two fibers that leave the city limits to a variety of providers. As BlueMile and the CIC expand that network, BlueMile will be able to offer high-speed access from a number of companies to businesses in Gahanna via the other fiber strands within the city limits.

CIC board members on June 8 learned that the negotiations are continuing and that an agreement could be completed within the next few weeks.

Through the agreements, both the city and the CIC are expected to generate revenue.

The CIC also is completing a five-year financial forecast, which, Porter said, will show the board how much revenue it should expect so that members could plan how to spend it.

"We're doing financial planning to enhance our financial stewardship," Porter said.

Part of the financial commitment over the next five years will include marketing the CIC to Gahanna residents, who might not understand how the organization could help them and their community.

Karen McClain, chair of the group's marketing committee, already has presented a report to the CIC board, saying the committee intends to create a website as a potential marketing tool for local businesses.

The CIC's marketing committee also is working to establish a physical address and phone number for the organization. Currently, meetings are held at Gahanna City Hall. The address being proposed is City Hall, 200 S. Hamilton Road. The phone number has yet to be determined.

The marketing committee already has secured the domains, www.gahannacic.org and www.gahannacic.com.

During the June 8 meeting, the marketing committee requested that 5 percent of revenue be dedicated to the committee to complete its goals.

Porter said the group needs to see the financial forecast before it could move forward with that request. He said the CIC board hasn't determined whether the marketing committee would receive a percentage of CIC funds or a specific dollar amount annually.
