Kiwi's Clubhouse, a child-care center offering hourly services, is scheduled to open late next month at 973 E. Johnstown Road.

Gahanna's Planning Commission on Feb. 22 approved a conditional-use application to allow the day-care center in an area zoned community commercial.

The business will meet the needs of an underserved group of parents, said applicant Sunshine Diller.

Kiwi's flexible scheduling would allow parents to choose the day and times they need, and a contract isn't required, she said. It's ideal for parents who work part-time or split-shifts, and only need a few days or hours of care, Diller said.

The business also would allow clients to make last-minute reservations, providing parents with backup child-care for emergencies.

An outdoor play area will be fenced and located on the north side of the building.

Commission member Kristin Rosan questioned the safety of the children navigating through the parking lot area to the playground.

According to Diller, Kiwi's Lewis Center location has similar challenges. She said a teacher would escort the children across the parking lot to the playground as they hold on to a rope.

Diller told ThisWeek the facility is slated to open the week of March 26 or April 2.

In other business, the commission scheduled a 6:30 p.m. workshop Wednesday, March 7, for several pieces of legislation related to the redevelopment of the northeast corner of Morrison and South Hamilton roads.

Applicant Sean Sanford has requested approval of conditional uses, variances, design review and a final development plan for Southgate Crossing, 360 S. Hamilton Road. The plan calls for a Circle K gas station and retail center, as well as a Tim Hortons with a drive-through on 1.3 acres. The commission requested a traffic study be conducted at the proposed site. Results of the study as well as signage are expected be discussed at the workshop.
