Gahanna residents wanting to add a kick to game-day tailgating are invited to take a class featuring interactive grill demonstrations.

The Ohio Herb Education Center has scheduled a "Game Day Tailgating" class for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the center, 110 Mill St.

Herb center supervisor Zac Guthrie and herbalist Wendy Winkler are teaming up to demonstrate techniques that should help make residents' tailgate the king of the lot.

"Wendy will focus on providing her knowledge of herbs and history (and) then incorporate how they relate to one of America's favorite game-day rituals -- tailgating," Guthrie said. "Wendy also will provide techniques on pairing of herbs with various grilled meats and veggies, along with providing various grilling recipes."

She will discuss everything from using rosemary on the coals to building layers of flavor with brines, rubs and sauces.

Guthrie will focus on different preparations of the more popular grilled meats used in tailgates with an herbal twist.

"The class will include samplings, demonstrating how herbs enhance the flavor of food, showcasing the difference between marinades and brines, what spices and herbs to use for rubs (and) finishing off the perfect grilled meat with sauces and glazes," Guthrie said.

Each participate will walk away with his or her own herbal spice rub, recipes and knowledge to show off their herbal skills this fall football season.

"I look forward to hosting a great class," Guthrie said.

Cost of the class is $10 for residents and $15 for others.
