Healthy Holiday 5K to feature decorated runners
Local residents could see what appears to be Santa or reindeer dashing through Creekside Park on Friday, Nov. 23.
The third annual Healthy Holiday 5K and Family Fun Run, sponsored by Mount Carmel, will begin at Creekside, 123 Mill St., with check-in at 3:45 p.m.
"We do prizes for runners who dress up, putting lights on themselves or a Santa hat," said Eric Miller, race coordinator. "We encourage that."
A special award will go to the runner with the most creative holiday costume.
Miller said the one-mile fun run is a great family activity, allowing children and their parents to run together.
"The kids get excited about it," he said.
The Healthy Holiday Fun Run 5K will begin at 4:45 p.m., followed by the Family Fun Run at 5 p.m.
Runners will follow a portion of the Holiday Lights! parade route beginning at Creekside, and the 5K will continue on a 3.1-mile path through Creekside.
T-shirts, jingle bells and goodie bags will be given to the first 200 runners.
"It starts right before the parade and ends at the plaza, so runners can finish among a decent crowd," Miller said. "It's really more of a holiday fun run, but for the serious runners who want to be timed, there are clocks."
He said the 5K is a sanctioned course for runners who are interested in improving their times.
"We do try to have a rabbit that sets the pace," Miller said. "If you can beat this guy, you can get free passes."
The passes are for admission to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's Winter Wildlights.
Registration is available at the Gahanna Convention & Visitors Bureau website, visitgahanna.com. Checks should be made payable to the GCVB. The entry fee is $20 prior to race day and $25 on race day.
Race packets will be available for pickup prior to race day at Gahanna's Second Sole, 1245 N. Hamilton Road.
Miller said race proceeds would go into the general fund to help pay for the Holiday Lights! parade.
