Board expected to appoint Harrell to vacant seat
The Gahanna-Jefferson Board of Education plans to appoint former school-levy campaign co-chairman Dewitt Harrell to the vacant board seat during today's (Jan. 10) organizational meeting at Clark Hall.
Harrell, chief financial officer of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, would fill the seat vacated by Heather Bishoff, who resigned Dec. 30 after winning her bid to the Ohio House of Representatives' 20th District seat.
The board received 23 applications from candidates interested in filling Bishoff's seat.
Harrell and Bishoff served together as two of five chairpersons on the Citizens for Quality Schools to tout a permanent levy in the school district in the fall of 2010.
Harrell has worked as the chief financial officer of the library since 2007.
In information presented to the board, Harrell said he's an innovative problem solver with the ability to pursue creative solutions to diverse financial and information-system and business challenges.
His resume notes that his leadership skills help motivate high-performance teams, establishing visions and strategies designed to achieve exceptional and sustainable results.
Harrell moved his family to Gahanna from Cleveland in 1996. He said he chose Gahanna because of its impressive high school and graduation rate.
Harrell is a member of the Gahanna-Jefferson Education Foundation, the district's business advisory committee and the city's citizens financial advisory committee.
