Summer of the Arts will kick off at noon Saturday, May 11, at Friendship Park, 150 Oklahoma Ave., with the Family ARTcade celebration.
Summer of the Arts is a free series of interactive art adventures featuring professional and student artists, musicians, actors and storytellers. Family ARTcade Day was inspired by Caine's Arcade, a cardboard arcade a boy made at his father's auto body shop in east Los Angeles. When a movie maker discovered it, Caine and his arcade went viral.
Families are encouraged to get to Friendship Park early with their own supplies to make cardboard arcade games and a suggested admission of a canned item for GRIN. After the arcade is set up, participants can play the games other families created.
As part of the celebration, this year's Story Trail will officially open at 12:30 p.m. The Story Trail is the eco-learning component of the Herbal Trail.
The 2013 Story Trail is a collaborative effort between the City of Gahanna Department of Parks and Recreation, the Gahanna Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Gahanna branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library and Gahanna Jefferson High School creative writing and art students.
This year's story, The Acorn, is an original piece of work by Gahanna Lincoln High School creative writing students. The students were guided by Angie Starkey, from the Gahanna branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library on the elements of children's stories:a simple storyline, slight conflict and a resolution.
After the story was written, GLHS art students illustrated the pages, the library created Ready to Read interactive prompts and the Department of Parks & Recreation spearheaded the effort to have the pages enlarged, framed and placed on pedestals along the nature trail at Friendship Park.
The Acorn will be available to enjoy throughout the summer.
As for Summer of the Arts, Gahanna families can enjoy a casual, fun atmosphere from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, June 20, June 27, July 11, July 18 and July 25. Each night will feature a variety of interactive activities, music, games, theater previews and more at Creekside Plaza, 117 Mill St.
