Swimming pool repaired, ready for season

By

The front pool at the Gahanna Swimming Pool, 148 Parkland Drive, was scheduled to open Wednesday, June 5, following needed maintenance repairs.

Parks and recreation director Tony Collins said the pool didn't open May 25 because a maintenance project took longer than anticipated.

He said the parks-rec staff began the process to repair the pool floor earlier in the year, but inclement spring weather and the discovery of additional maintenance needs required more time.

The repair of the pool bottom included sandblasting, patching concrete, resurfacing and painting.

"Maintenance on the pool floor was imperative for the safety of all users this summer," Collins said. "The concrete had deteriorated considerably."

After the maintenance was finished, the pool needed to be filled with water and chemically balanced prior to opening.

Collins said the parks staff has been working aggressively to keep up with the aging infrastructure that's 50-plus years old.

While repairs were under way, pool members were encouraged to visit Hunters Ridge Pool, 341 Harrow Blvd., or the back pool at the Gahanna Swimming Pool, which has a depth of 4 feet.

Special events at the pools will include Ice Cream Night from 5 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday, from June 11 to Aug. 13, at Hunters Ridge Pool. The event is free for pool members with $5 discounted general admission. Bowls of ice cream are $1.

Hot Dog Night is scheduled from 5 to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday, from June 6 to Aug. 15 at Gahanna Swimming Pool. This event is free for pool members with $5 discounted general admission. Hot dogs are $1.

Families looking to take in a movie by the pool can join Gahanna Parks & Rec Dive-In Movies at Hunters Ridge Pool.

Movies are free for pool members and $5 for others. Discounted admission begins at 4 p.m. Movie start times are 8:30 p.m. or dusk. The Dive-In features and dates include Disney's Earth (rated G), June 21; Madagascar (rated PG), July 12; and Jaws (PG-13), Aug. 9.

Pool memberships still may be purchased at Hunters Ridge or the Gahanna Swimming Pool or the parks-recreation office at Gahanna City Hall, 200 S. Hamilton Road.
