Gahanna Summer Lunch Club feeds nearly 5,000

Almost 5,000 lunches were served to local families this summer, thanks to the Gahanna Summer Lunch Club.

Mindy McFann, lunch club director, said 4,650 meals were provided to families at Goshen Lane, Royal Manor and Lincoln elementary schools, First Baptist Church (on Havens Corner) and Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church.

The program was started many years ago through a partnership of local churches called The Bridge of Gahanna.

Although the free lunch program is targeted to families that are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches within the Gahanna-Jefferson schools, it's open to anyone.

The lunch club participated for the first time in this year's Gahanna Lions Club July 4 parade.

"We also had a new site manager at Lincoln Elementary, and we moved our end-of-the-year party to the Gahanna Pool from the YMCA because people could walk to the pool," McFann said. "We also had a professional photographer (Ali Deck) take family pictures at the end of the year."

McFann said the club is trying to find a community site for area churches, GRIN and the summer lunch program "to share all God has given us."

A fundraiser began Sept. 1 to raise money for next year's program through restaurant discount cards.

The cards cost $15 and provide a 15-percent discount at area restaurants. To purchase a card, call McFann at 614-397-7787 or Dana Stuckey at 614-337-1000.
