Barn at Rocky Fork Creek to feature outdoor seating, patio bar

When Cameron Mitchell's new steak house, the Barn at Rocky Creek, opens in June, customers will be able to enjoy features like a covered entrance, additional outdoor seating and an enclosed patio bar.

The Gahanna Planning Commission on Dec. 4 approved a site plan, signs and several variances for the property at 1370 East Johnstown Road. It's the site of the former Hoggy's.

Planning and zoning administrator Bonnie Gard said additions to the existing building include the porte-cochere in the front, a standing-seam metal roof over outdoor seating areas, a smoker building and a patio bar structure.

The exterior finishes will be red and white, in keeping with the barn theme, Gard said.

When the roundabout was installed at Morse and Route 62, Gard said, the right of way was relocated 23 feet closer to the existing building, making the building noncompliant with the 60-foot setback required by code for commercial structures.

She said the porte-cochere at the front of the building would allow patrons to exit vehicles without being exposed to the elements. The addition will extend to within 8.6 feet of the new right-of-way line, so a variance was requested and approved.

Variances also were requested and approved to allow a ground sign to be located within 8.6 feet of the public right of way between the porte-cochere supports, a wall sign greater than 50 square feet and total sign area exceeding 150 square feet.

The signs include one ground mounted sign, one wall sign and two sets of channel letters on the building.

Stanley Young, representing the Columbus Sign Co. Inc., said the structure is relatively large.

The wall sign will be to the right of the entrance.

"From a design standpoint, I wanted something large enough but balance the building," Young said. "We feel it accentuates the building. The sign itself is fabricated from wood slates."

He said the channel letters would be LEDs filled with low voltage.

"It gives a softer look," Young said.

Gard said it's a great remodel for Cameron Mitchell.

"We're quite happy for them to bring their business to Gahanna," she said.

Civil engineer Tom Warner, of Advanced Civil Design, said he's excited to see the structure at Rogers Market occupied by Cameron Mitchell.

"From a site standpoint, there are minor modifications," he said. "We're adding handicap spaces to the south and west. This structure has had the creek for many years. We're going to take advantage of the back."

Architect Carter Bean said the rear of the restaurant features a covered patio with a roll-down screen, like the Rusty Bucket; an enclosed outdoor bar; a fire pit in the center; and a structure where meats would be smoked.

The upscale casual steak house will have seating for 330 guests It will feature a large dining room, an in-house butchering room, a bake shop, an extensive bourbon lounge and an expansive terrace overlooking a creek and manicured grounds.
