A free community lunch and fun day is being held in Gahanna to honor Martin Luther King Jr.
New Life Church Gahanna, 3690 Stygler Road, will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day by hosting the event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the church.
Executive assistant Cathy Phillips said New Life decided the lunch would be beneficial because more and more families are applying for free and reduced-price lunches within the local schools.
Gahanna Residents In Need is scheduled to participate, as well as New Life's Total Wellness Ministry and Eyes Wide Open, which educates people about human trafficking.
"We plan to have blow-up games and fun activities for all ages," Phillips said. "We plan to have a wide selection of menu options to accommodate all religions and cultures. Our screens will display a slideshow of quotes and pictures from Dr. Martin Luther King, so we'll have an educational piece to the event also."
Local congregations and more than 20 local businesses unite each year to serve thousands of lunches during the summer, and the King celebration is just an extension of that community service, Phillips said.
"We know there are kids within walking distance and parents who would love to bring their children here to play for the afternoon in a warm, welcoming environment when it's too cold to play outside," Phillips said. "We plan for it to be casual, fun and to serve a need in the community."
