The Gahanna Lincoln High School speech and debate team competed at the Tarhe Trails district qualifier of the Ohio High School Speech League Saturday at Mount Vernon High School, placing third overall of 17 teams.
Qualifying for state competition are seniors Sedona Rosenberg in US extemporaneous speaking; Max Agranoff, Kyle Clark, Skye Booth and Jassy Da Silva in public forum debate; Kate Frank in oratorical interpretation; and Olivia Smith in prose/poetry.
Juniors qualifying are Summit Rosenberg in humorous interpretation, Loie Greenwood in original oratory and sophomore Stephen Sponhour in Lincoln Douglas debate.
Seniors Matthew Zianni and Megan Ellsesser will compete in student congress.
Alternates are seniors Jennie McAndrew and Stacy Studer in original oratory and international extemporaneous speaking, respectively, and junior Caleb Webb in dramatic interpretation.
Selected team members will compete Feb. 14 and 15 at the Western Ohio national qualifier at Cincinnati Princeton.
The OHSSL state finals will be conducted at Wooster High School Feb. 27 through March 1. Students from the other five State districts -- Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Youngstown and Greater Miami Valley -- will join the Tarhe Trails qualifiers.
The team is coached by speech and debate teacher Lyle Linerode, English teacher Kristen Juth, former competitor Evan Ecos and volunteer Bruce Mann.
