Girls basketball squad to play Newark Catholic in district semi
The Gahanna Christian Academy girls basketball team plays top-seeded Newark Catholic in a Division IV district semifinal Thursday, Feb. 28, at Lakewood.
The fourth-seeded Eagles, who have won 11 of their last 12 games and improved to 19-3 with a 47-34 win over seventh-seeded Berne Union in a third-round game Feb. 21, did not play the Green Wave during the regular season.
Newark Catholic defeated Danville 62-46 on Feb. 21 to improve to 22-2.
The semifinal winner will play third-seeded Shekinah Christian or fifth-seeded Morral Ridgedale in the district final Saturday, March 2, at Lakewood. The district champion advances to a regional semifinal March 7 at Pickerington North.
Gahanna Christian lost to Shekinah Christian 53-47 in overtime Jan. 7 but has not played Ridgedale this season.
Guard Alex Grubich had 14 points, guard Dana Parkman scored 12 and guard Christina Grubich scored 10 against Berne Union.
The Eagles, who had a first-round bye, defeated 10th-seeded Delaware Christian 64-53 in the second round Feb. 19. Parkman had a game-high 37 points and Alex Grubich scored 10.
Gahanna Christian secured its first MOCAL championship with a 55-28 win over Grove City Christian on Feb. 8. The Eagles finished 10-2 in the league, ahead of Granville Christian (9-3), Tree of Life (8-4), Delaware Christian (7-5), Fairfield Christian (6-6), Madison Christian (2-10) and Grove City Christian (0-12).
"I've been with some of the girls since they were eighth graders and they gradually got better each year, and you can't express how happy they were in winning that," coach John Grubich said of the league title.
Boys basketball team opens tournament
The boys basketball team was seeded sixth of 19 teams in the Division IV district tournament and played host to eighth-seeded Shekinah Christian in the first round Feb. 27.
Both teams had a first-round bye.
The winner plays fourth-seeded Danville or fifth-seeded Tree of Life in a district semifinal Monday, March 4, at Reynoldsburg.
The semifinal winner will face top-seeded Africentric, 11th-seeded Delaware Christian, 12th-seeded Millersport or 15th-seeded Columbus International in a district final Wednesday, March 6, at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
Gahanna Christian was 15-7 overall before playing Shekinah Christian and finished 9-3 in the MOCAL to place second, behind Fairfield Christian (12-0) and ahead of Tree of Life (8-4), Delaware Christian (5-7), Grove City Christian (4-8), Granville Christian (4-8) and Madison Christian (0-12).
