Boys basketball team reaches semifinal

By

The Columbus Academy boys basketball team earned a spot in a Division III district semifinal by defeating 21st-seeded Cardington 60-34 on Feb. 27 at home.

The second-seeded Vikings were 18-5 before playing sixth-seeded Worthington Christian on March 5.

The winner advanced to play fourth-seeded Fredericktown or eighth-seeded Ready in a district final at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.

Fredericktown was 21-3 before playing Ready. The Freddies defeated 18th-seeded Galion Northmor 64-35 in the first round and 14th-seeded Amanda-Clearcreek 40-33 in the second round.

Ready entered the semifinal 13-10. The Silver Knights defeated 20th-seeded Heath 70-45 in the first round and fifth-seeded Grandview 45-42 in the second round.

The Vikings did not play Fredericktown or Ready in the regular season.

The district champion will play Dayton Stivers or Versailles in a regional semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at Kettering Fairmont, with the winner to play in a regional final March 16 at Fairmont.

Against Cardington, senior forward Daniel Aronowitz scored 17 points and senior post player Aakaash Paladugu scored 14.

"I thought our ball pressure really set the tone and made it difficult for them to get into their sets," coach Jeff Warstler said. "Dan and Aakaash stepped up and made some shots and (point guard) Jared (Harris) did a nice job controlling tempo on both ends of the floor."

Jones injured in first state wrestling match

Sophomore wrestler Dan Jones (195 pounds) lost his first-round match in the Division III state tournament by default after injuring his right shoulder in the second period against Carlisle's Marcus Smith.

Jones, who said it was a recurring injury, then lost by default to Archbold's Travis Jaramillo to finish the season 31-9.

The state tournament was held Feb. 28 through March 2 at Ohio State. Jones advanced by finishing fourth at district Feb. 22 and 23 at Duncan Falls Philo.

"The experience of just going to states is just incredible," he said. "It's not something that everybody gets to experience, so I feel fortunate just to be able to go down there."
