Boys soccer team ends rewarding campaign

The Gahanna Christian Academy boys soccer team's most successful season ended with a 2-1 loss to Columbus International in a Division III district semifinal Oct. 23 at Grove City Christian.

The fourth-seeded Eagles finished 16-2 overall and won the MOCAL at 4-0.

Senior midfielder Connor Maclellan scored against fifth-seeded International and junior goalkeeper Alec Schlesselman had 14 saves.

After a first-round bye, Gahanna Christian defeated 10th-seeded Fairbanks 5-1 on Oct. 19 at home. Sophomore midfielder Emmanuel Dapaa scored three goals and Maclellan and senior forward Micah Sauder each scored one. Schlesselman had 11 saves and senior Connor Dyckes had two.

The Eagles won their first league title, finishing ahead of Delaware Christian (2-1-1), Granville Christian (1-2-1), Madison Christian (1-3) and Tree of Life (1-3).

Tree of Life had won three consecutive league titles.

Dapaa led the team in scoring with 35 goals and 15 assists. He was first-team all-district and all-league.

Maclellan had 21 goals and 18 assists and was first-team all-league and second-team all-district. Dyckes, a midfielder, had seven goals and eight assists, and was first-team all-league.

Schlesselman, who finished with 173 saves, was first-team all-league and third-team all-district. Senior defender Joseph Schoen was first-team all-league and Sauder was honorable mention all-league.

Girls volleyball team falls in second round

The girls volleyball team lost at eighth-seeded Berne Union 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 in the second round of the Division IV district tournament Oct. 17 to finish 9-12 overall.

The 13th-seeded Eagles had a first-round bye.

Gahanna Christian went 3-5 in the MOCAL to tie Dela-ware Christian for third, behind Madison Christian (8-0) and Granville Christian (5-3) and ahead of Tree of Life (1-7).

Junior Jenna Kirk was first-team all-league and second-team all-district, and junior Melissa Sutton was first-team all-league and honorable mention all-district. Both are setters and outside hitters.

Junior middle hitter Karina Sauder was honorable mention all-league.

Other players eligible to return are juniors Caitlin Jacques (defensive specialist), Sarah Manko (defensive specialist), Kaylah Price (outside hitter) and Grace Roehrenbeck (outside hitter) and freshman Katie Downing (middle hitter).
