Led by Abby Wilson, the Columbus Academy girls swimming and diving team finished 12th of the 49 teams that scored in the Division II state meet Feb. 19-21 at Branin Natatorium in Canton.
The Vikings scored 65 points and Gates Mills Hawken won with 217.
Wilson was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 51.97 seconds) and 13th in the 100 backstroke (58.81). She also joined Sydney Brault, Anya Kone' and India Sherman to place sixth in the 200 free relay (1:38).
Kone', Sherman, Sarah Campbell and Laura Cullen were 10th in the 200 medley relay (1:50.9), and Campbell, Brault, Cullen and Sherman were 16th in the 400 free relay (3:44.39).
Sherman was 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.51), and Campbell was 19th in the 100 back (59.65) and 22nd in the 200 individual medley (2:15.34).
The boys team finished 27th (19) at state behind champion Dayton Oakwood (214) as 58 teams scored.
Nate Goldfarb was 10th in the 100 breast (58.42) and 18th in the 200 IM (2:01.31). He also teamed with Mitchell Dreisbach, Gavin Koerner and Dylan Warren to place 11th in the 200 medley relay (1:39.75).
Boys basketball team wins eighth in a row
The boys basketball team won its eighth consecutive game, closing on a 15-2 run to defeat 15th-seeded Galion Northmor 59-43 in the first round of the Division III district tournament Feb. 21 at home.
Jonathan Kornberg scored 19 points and Charlie Watters had 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, five blocks and four steals. Ryan Alexander added 10 points.
The 13th-seeded Vikings were 11-12 before playing at second-seeded Ready on Feb. 26.
The winner plays sixth-seeded Centerburg or 16th-seeded East Knox in a district semifinal Tuesday, March 4, at Hilliard Davidson.
The semifinal winner plays in a district final March 6 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum, most likely against top-seeded Hartley.
Jones to compete at state in wrestling
Junior wrestler Dan Jones finished second at 220 pounds in the Division III district tournament Feb. 21 and 22 at Heath, earning a return trip to state Thursday, Feb. 27-Saturday, March 1, at Ohio State.
Jones lost to Hartley's Jared Croswell 1-0 in his district final, a week after he beat Croswell 3-2 to win a sectional title. Jones was the only district competitor for the Vikings, who tied Mount Gilead for 32nd (20) behind champion Hartley (107.5) as 50 teams scored.
Last season at state, Jones lost his first-round match at 195 by default after injuring his right shoulder. He then lost by default in the second round to finish the season 31-9.
Boys, girls bowlers compete at district
The boys and girls bowling teams competed in the Division II district tournament Feb. 22 at HP Lanes but did not qualify for state.
For the boys, the top three teams and top three individuals not on qualifying teams advanced. For the girls, the top two teams and top two individuals not on qualifying teams advanced.
The boys team was 11th (3,497) of 14 teams behind champion Jonathan Alder (4,360). Max Smith was 41st of 90 competitors with a 536 series, followed by Andrew Kennedy (47th, 511), Nick Smith (54th, 499), Sean Reagan (61st, 480) and Aaron Brown (69th, 451).
The girls team finished 11th (2,613) of 12 teams behind champion Ready (3,577). Emma Farrenkopf and Allie Wallace tied for 40th among 78 competitors with a 411 series, followed by Leya Mohsin (tied for 47th, 395), Yasmine Kashubeck (60th, 357) and Maddie Edwards (64th, 352).
Girls basketball team loses tourney opener
The girls basketball team lost at 11th-seeded Northmor 46-26 in the first round of the Division III district tournament Feb. 17.
Zaria McBride scored 15 points for the 16th-seeded Vikings, who finished 7-12.
