Baseball team earns share of MSL title


The Columbus Academy baseball team earned its first league title since 2003, tying Bexley for first place in the MSL-Ohio Division at 12-2.

The Vikings' last league title came in their final season in the Buckeye Athletic Conference-Ohio Division.

Academy is 18-5 overall.

Seeded first for the Division III district tournament, the Vikings play host to 19th-seeded Cardington in the second round Thursday, May 15. Both teams had a first-round bye.

The winner plays sixth-seeded West Jefferson, 15th-seeded Centerburg or 18th-seeded Madison Plains in a district semifinal Monday, May 19, at DeSales. Academy defeated Madison Plains 6-3 on April 21 and 11-6 on May 7 in league play.

The semifinal winner plays third-seeded Fredericktown, fifth-seeded Hartley, 10th-seeded Utica or 12th-seeded Galion Northmor in a district final Wednesday, May 21, at Beavers Field in Lancaster.

Through 22 games, Lee Solomon was hitting .435, followed by Scott Mackenzie (.412), Charlie Watters (.406) and Garrett Levine (.397).

Grant Harmon was 5-1 with a 1.67 ERA, 25 strikeouts and 23 walks in 29 1/3 innings.

Girls lacrosse team wins league title

The girls lacrosse team won its fifth consecutive Central Independent League title, tying Bexley and DeSales for first at 6-1.

Academy defeated DeSales 9-8 on May 6 and lost to Bexley 10-9 on April 5. DeSales defeated Bexley 9-6 on April 8.

The Vikings, who are 11-3 overall, play host to Columbus School for Girls or Big Walnut in the second round of the Division II South/Central Region tournament Thursday, May 15. Academy had a first-round bye.

The second-round winner plays Cincinnati Country Day, Cincinnati Indian Hill or Middletown Fenwick in a regional semifinal Tuesday, May 20.

Boys tennis team advances in OTCA

The boys tennis team advanced to the Central/Southeast district final of the Division II OTCA team tournament by winning 5-0 at Coshocton on May 8.

Winners were Jacob Wareti 6-1, 6-0 at first singles, Evan Alexander 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, Austin Lawrence 6-1, 6-0 at third singles, Ryan Jung and Shrikar Kundur 6-1, 6-4 at first doubles and Nikhil Patel and Dean Firouzian 6-0, 6-3 at second doubles.

Academy will play Bexley or Wellington in a district final on a date to be determined.

The Vikings compete in a Division II sectional tournament Thursday, May 15, and Saturday, May 17, at home. The top four finishers in singles and doubles advance to district May 23 and 24 at home.
