The German Village Society is putting the finishing touches on a search committee that is being formed to find a new executive director.

According to an e-mail sent by society president Mary Cusick, seven area residents have agreed to sit on the committee, which will be chaired by two board members, Tim Marker and Norm Hall.

Both Hall and Marker have professional backgrounds in human resources.

"We are fortunate they are willing to give leadership to this very important project," Cusick said in the e-mail.

The committee's goal is to find a new executive director by Jan. 1 to replace Katharine Moore, who came to the society 13 years ago. Moore recently announced she is leaving to take a full-time director position at the Jefferson Center for Learning and the Arts.

Moore will exit at the end of the month. Jody Graichen, director of preservation programs, will act as the interim director.

Marker said the search process will be similar to the last time the society sought a director.

He said the first step is developing a description of the position and then seeking board approval.

"Frankly it's a pretty straight-forward process," Marker said. "We are confident we can do a good job."

Other areas the committee will tackle include compensation and whether to take on a national search. It will also handle the interview process.

Cusick said Monday the committee's members were chosen to represent different backgrounds and perspectives.

"Each of those (committee members) come to the table with a very different point of view," Cusick said.

She would not say whether the society was seeking a national search, instead leaving the question for the committee to decide. Nonetheless, she said with the Internet job posts can be easily accessed from distant locations.

"I believe it will make the opportunity available to lots and lots of people," she said.

Individuals who will be part of the committee are: Tim Straker, a former board member and current German Village Commission member; resident Rita Wolfe of Wolfe Associates Inc.; Catherine Adams, owner of Caterina and member of the long range planning committee; Hyla Griesdorn, former board member; and Pam Edwards, former board member, and member of the last executive director search committee.

Marker said he expects more information will be available at the society's next meeting 6 p.m. Aug. 4 at the society Meeting Haus, 588 S. Third St.

In related news, the society will hold a lunch to celebrate Moore from 1 to 3 p.m. July 27 at Barcelona Restaurant, 263 E. Whittier St.

The event will include light fare and beverages.

The society asks those interested in attending to contact the nonprofit at 221-8888.
