German Village resident David Phalen does not consider himself an artist. Still, the 72-year-old has had a longtime interest in photography.

Phalen will display his work through April 20 at Caterina Ltd., 571 S. Third St. An artist's reception will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 8 at the business.

Titled "By Land and By Sea," the exhibition will include 18 photos taken while Phalen traveled the British Isles in August 2007. It will include shots from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Orkney Islands and one from Paris.

Phalen said he has been interested in photography most of his life.

"I can remember developing film when I was in middle school," he said.

Phalen bounced in and out of the photography world throughout his life.

In recent years, with the advances in technology, he was able to practice his hobby more.

"I've always been involved to some extent, but retirement and the advent of digital technology let me get back into it in a serious manner," Phalen said. "I bought my first digital camera and it was all over."

He said digital cameras eliminated some of the cost associated with photography. He now uses any proceeds he makes from photo sales to continue taking pictures.

"I'm not a professional," Phalen said. "I don't want a job. I had a job for 41 years."

Phalen, a retired accounts payable manager for a distribution company, said he considers himself a visual person.

"My major interests most of the time are lines, shapes, colors and textures," he said. "I like to capture them as I see them."

Because of this, Phalen's work mostly consists of landscapes and street scenes.

"Pretty much whatever strikes me at the time," he said. "I'm not hung up on things."

He said part of his philosophy is to look for photo opportunities around each corner.

"Every trip we take is a photo opportunity," he said. "You walk around the street and you'll find something."
