More than 20 local businesses will participate in next weekend's fourth annual "Mother May I" event, held throughout German Village.

The free event, organized by the German Village Business Committee, will take place noon to 6 p.m. May 9. A number of businesses are expected to be open both before and after the event hours.

"It's a perfect way to spend the time to shop, dine and stroll in German Village with special offerings for mom," said Anne Fletcher, co-chair of the event and co-owner of Pistacia Vera.

Much of what made the event successful in the past will remain this year. Various businesses and shops throughout the area will offer gifts and incentives to celebrate Mother's Day, which is the next day.

"It's just a different way to honor your mother," said Catherine Adams, owner of Caterina Ltd. "What mother doesn't enjoy a peaceful stroll walking and talking with their kids and grandkids?"

Mother May I, modeled after Village Lights, will be held the same day as the German Village Garten Club's annual Garten Markt.

"They draw a crowd that we benefit from and we draw a crowd that they benefit," Fletcher said.

Adams said the events helps show people the area isn't as spread out as some might think.

"It is similar to Village Lights in that it was started by the businesses as a way to help connect the dots for those who aren't familiar with German Village," Adams said.

Local shops and restaurants will be involved in a number of different ways. For example:

Bakery Gingham, 189 Thurman Ave., will offer sample cupcakes and a Polaroid picture with a purchase of $5 or more.

Helen Winnemore Craft, 150 East Kossuth St., give offer mothers a free "Bath Tub Tea" and a chance to enter a drawing for a $25 gift certificate.

The DogWorks/Cats2, 195 Thurman Ave., will have a veterinarian on hand between 1 and 2:30 p.m. offering microchips for animals at a discounted rate.

Metroscap, 177 E. Beck St., will hold a sidewalk sale and the first giveaway note cards to mothers. There will also be a drawing for a $25 gift card.
