The first of several art shows featuring the Central Ohio Watercolor Society will be held over the next three weeks in German Village.

A public showing of “New Traditions,” an exhibit featuring the winners of a juried art selection, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Meeting Haus, 588 S. Third St. It then will be open to the public during normal business hours through Dec. 4.

The exhibit will feature at least 50 paintings. Renowned watercolor artist and instructor Frank Webb of Pittsburgh judged the winning pieces.

Gregg Hoelzel, vice president of the watercolor society, said his organization holds two shows a year. The fall exhibit will be held in German Village over the next five years. He said he’s pleased with the relationship his organization has forged with the German Village Society.

“They were so generous and congenial and cooperative, it truly was a marriage made in artistic heaven,” he said.

Hoelzel said the talent level of people in the watercolor society is appreciable.

“All the artists who participate in both the fall and spring show are juried into it,” he said. “They don’t simply just mail dues in. They’re invited.”

Shiloh Todorov, director of the GVS, said the new relationship with the watercolor society is mutually beneficial.

“We feel like it does a couple of things,” she said. “One, it gives people a reason to come to German Village. Also, I think it goes toward our mission as a nonprofit of providing a public service.”

It’s another important event in a community that already has robust arts culture, she said. For example, the Art Crawl held each July brings dozens of artists and hundreds of people to the community.

Also, each stop on the annual Haus und Garten Tour has an artist from the Ohio Watercolor Society painting live pictures.

“German Village has lots of little galleries, and we are populated with artists who do all kinds of media,” Todorov said. “Those people are regionally, nationally and internationally recognized.”
