Comedy is returning to the South Side of Columbus.

Shadowbox Live will hold its first comedy night at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 503 S. Front St. in the Brewery District.

The headliner is Bill Squire of Cleveland. In addition to several national appearances, Squire is a cast member on the YouTube web series “Man in the Box,” which has more than 60,000 subscribers, nearly 300 episodes and is aired on Cinemax OnDemand.

Also featured in the Jan. 17 show will be Columbus comics Justin Golak, Travis Hoewischer, Sumukh Torgalkar, Mark Lucas and Michael Meyers.

Cost of admission is $5.

Shadowbox Live’s plan is to offer comedy the first and third Tuesday of every month.

Jimmy Mak, head writer and performer at Shadowbox, said comedy is yet another way for the troupe to evolve in nontraditional performances.

“It’s not at all what we do,” Mak said. “It’s a completely different art form. The idea is hopefully for it to continue and grow.”

Professional laughs have been hard to find south of downtown since the Columbus Maennerchor, which hosted several comedy nights, closed.

A few other places that have held open-mic nights have since stopped, said Golak, a local comedian.

Golak said Columbus has a big audience for comedy and the Shadowbox facility is a prime location for standup.

“I think it will be good for performers and comedians to have a place to go,” he said.
