Nominations open for Jefferson Awards

Nominations are being accepted for the 2013 Jefferson Awards, a program to recognize residents who make significant contributions to their communities.

The national Jefferson Awards program was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Ohio Sen. Robert Taft Jr., to recognize individuals who do extraordinary things in their communities without expecting a reward.

The program is sponsored locally by WBNS-10TV and Nationwide Insurance. Organizers are seeking nominees who embody the true spirit of volunteerism -- people who don't look for recognition, but who deserve to be recognized.

Twenty nominees will be invited to the local Jefferson Awards ceremony planned for April 4. At that time, five central Ohio winners will be announced.

Each of those winners will receive a medallion and a check for $500. One of those five will be selected to attend the national Jefferson Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., where five national winners are selected. In 2011, one of the central Ohio local winners, Rachel Muha of Westerville, was selected as a national winner.

The deadline for 2013 nominations is Feb. 8.
