Crystal Ball

Annual Arthritis Foundation fundraiser slated Feb. 23

By ThisWeek Community News  •

The 37th annual Crystal Ball, one of the largest fundraisers for the central Ohio chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, is scheduled Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Aladdin Shrine Center, 3850 Stelzer Road.

The annual event features a catered dinner, cash bar, a silent auction, a live auction and live music.

Proceeds benefit educational programs and research efforts of the Arthritis Foundation.

The event raised $185,000 last year.

"It's one of the largest fundraisers we do," said Rochelle Bailey, community development manager for the foundation. "Our children's programs include a camp at Flying Horse Farms in Mount Gilead, and we give to research projects."

The Crystal Ball will begin with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by dinner from Catering by Design.

The band Next Exit will provide live entertainment.

Items included in the silent and live auctions include passes to the PGA Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, tickets to Ohio State University men's basketball games, memorabilia signed by Heisman trophy winner Archie Griffin, tickets to the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and a variety of restaurant and gift certificates.

The annual event also recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the arthritis community, Bailey said.

Event honorees for 2013 are Thomas Best, co-medical director of sports medicine and professor of family medicine at the Ohio State, and Howard Rutsky, president of Infinity Orthopedics.

The foundation credits Best with providing "exceptional and innovative care to arthritis sufferers."

Best focuses on muscle and tendon injuries, osteoarthritis and studies the role of muscles in management of osteoarthritis of the knee, according to a foundation press release.

Rutsky has provided nonsurgical solutions to people with arthritis for more than 22 years as a distributor for DJO Global. As a member of the Arthritis Foundation board of directors, he has dedicated his time to the foundation for more than 16 years.

The Crystal Ball is "black-tie optional."

Tickets are $125 each and available through Feb. 18.
