International High School will benefit from fundraiser

A fundraiser for Columbus International High School is scheduled next Wednesday, March 27, to help students travel to global educational experiences.

The event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 27 at the Boathouse Restaurant at Confluence Park. It will feature a sampling of international foods, a silent auction, comments from the Columbus International High School Ambassador Corps and performances by the student Drum and Dance Club.

Tickets are $50; all proceeds will provide travel scholarships to Columbus International High School students.

"Columbus International is a laboratory for leaders, community organizers and activists," Principal Ameer Kim El-Mallawany said in a statement. "Students do not just learn about global issues and diverse communities, they experience global issues in diverse communities, and this participatory learning is at the heart of our curriculum and our approach to learning."

Columbus International High School was started three years ago to continue the language immersion programs of Ecole Kenwood, Columbus Spanish Immersion Academy and Fifth Avenue International, and to provide a rigorous academic experience for any CCS student seeking a global focus.

After spending its first two years in swing locations, the school moved to a permanent home at the former North High School building on Arcadia Avenue, just south of Clintonville.

The school currently houses grades 9-12, but will expand to include grades 7-12 with the addition of the language-immersion middle schools next year, when the first class will graduate.

"As relative newcomers to the Clintonville neighborhood, we are excited about the opportunities to continue to grow our partnerships with local businesses and organizations to make global issues come to life for our students," Kim El Mallawany said in the statement. "We also hope to continue the legacy of North High School as a beacon of not only this neighborhood, but Columbus as a whole."
