German Village tree-lighting canceled

The annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony scheduled for tonight, Friday, Dec. 6, in Frank Fetch Park has been canceled because of weather.

The event was slated for 6 p.m. Organizers said the event will not be rescheduled, however the park will be illuminated and decorated as usual.

Meteorologists are predicting 4 to 6 inches of snow to fall by midnight.

People usually gather at the park to watch the ceremony, sip hot chocolate and celebrate a visit by Santa Claus.

“We’re sorry,” said Jerry Glick, a member of Friends of Frank Fetch Park and the German Village Garten Club, both of which tend to the park.

“We’ve done it before in nice flaky snow, but it’s not going to be nice flaky snow,” Glick said.

“A lot of people are not going to walk in this. They’re not going to drive in this.”
