Take a stroll through some of the neighborhood's most creative gardens at "Tango in Thyme," slated for 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 27, along City Park Avenue.
The German Village Garten Club's annual membership tour will feature up to eight gardens, each given descriptive names, from "Shaded Bliss" to "Tropical Paradise."
"Whether it's the color or greenery, they take pride in what they do," club member Ashleigh Lemon said of homeowners on the tour. "We are choosing the best of the best."
The tour kicks off at 594 City Park Ave., where tickets will be sold. Admission is $15. For those new to the tour, the price of admission includes a full-year membership in the club.
The ticket will list the address and homeowners' name for each of the gardens. Beverages and light hors d'oeuvres will be served at the tour stops.
Patrons also can groove to the tunes, as each house will be pumping out tango music.
"What we want is for people to just say, 'I had a good time last year,' and just remember the Garten Club is the one that runs the tour," said Bob Mullinax, a member of the club.
"The Garten Club will take you into gardens you will not otherwise see because they're hidden from the street."
The Book Loft will offer complimentary water. Meanwhile, everybody will receive a gift bag and gift certificates to restaurants.
The German Village Garten Club works to beautify the neighborhood by maintaining Frank Fetch Park and the Third Street planters.
It also hosts guest speakers throughout the year and sponsors the annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony. The club also co-sponsors, with Hausfrau Haven, the Third Sunday Concert Series in Frank Fetch Park.
The club added 30 members at last year's event.
"It was very impressive," said Mullinax, noting the club now has 200 members.
"Whenever we have something like this, we can always tell people about the other things we do," he said. "And with some of the things, you're just giving back to the Village."
