Boulevard Church to host eRecycling event Saturday
Boulevard Presbyterian Church will host an eRecycling Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the church's Second Avenue parking lot.
Church members will collect computers, monitors, scanners, printers, DVD players and other electronic items and turning over the equipment for responsible disposal.
"Our main focus for this event is computers and other peripheral items, like monitors and scanners," Boulevard associate pastor Brett Swanson said.
Televisions will not be accepted because it would cost a fee to dispose of them and the church wants to keep the eRecycling Day activity completely free of charge, Swanson said.
"We're also asking that no businesses bring their items," he said. "This is designed for members of the community."
The idea for the event rose out of an adult Sunday school class, which over the spring read and discussed the book "Serve God, Save the Planet: A Christian Call to Action," Swanson said.
"The book is about trying to encourage people to see how living a greener and more responsible life could be a matter of faith for them," he said.
"While the class decided it did not agree with everything that was in the book, there was a feeling that there could be some opportunities to link the discussion to some hands-on activities," Swanson said.
"Sometimes it's difficult for people to know where they can take their old and out-of-date computer and electronic equipment, which has to be disposed of properly," he said. "We really hope members of the community will take advantage of this event."
Out of the class discussion, the church itself is beginning to take steps to operate in a more environmentally friendly manner, Swanson said.
"We're getting away from using Styrofoam or plastic cups and increasing our recycling of plastic materials," he said. "Until recently, we were the only business in Grandview to be involved in carbon recycling pickup."
