The third annual Joann's Memorial Walk and Health Fair will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Grandview Center, 1515 W. Goodale Blvd.

Registration and the health fair will begin at 7:30 a.m. The walk will begin at 9 a.m. and the health fair will continue until 11 a.m.

The event is held in memory of Joann Warnke, who founded and conducted the Grandview Parks and Recreation Department's art class.

The 1.5-mile walk follows the same route Warnke liked to take on her daily walk, beginning and ending at the center, said her daughter, recreation supervisor Marta Durban.

"This was her route. She loved walking around town and greeting people as she walked," Durban said. "She never knew a stranger.

"The thing about this event is that it's a family-friendly walk," she said. "The route is not stressful. You can talk it at a nice relaxed pace."

The health fair will offer services and information from about three dozen area businesses and organizations, Durban said. This is the second year a health fair will be included as part of the morning's activities.

"I really like adding the health fair," Durban said. "We want to try to get as much health information for people as we can."

Entertainment will be provided by the Jollysteppers and participants in the children's dance classes at the Grandview Center taught by Irene Cohen, she said.

The registration fee for the walk is $10 per person in advance and $15 on Aug. 7. Walk-in registrations can be completed at the Parks and Recreation Department, 1515 W. Goodale until 4 p.m. Aug. 6.

Fees can be paid in cash or with checks made payable to GPRD.

The first 100 people who register will receive T-shirts.
