New name for 40 Plus better reflects mission

The local job-search training organization formerly known as 40 Plus has a new name as it marks its 30th anniversary.

The name change to Career Transition Institute "more accurately reflects what we do," said President Carol Davis.

Originally, "40 Plus" signified an emphasis on helping professionals age 40 or older, but the focus has shifted to younger people as well, Vice President Steve Matheny said.

The old name continued to mislead people into thinking the services provided were only for those 40 and older, he said.

"And some people thought we were a dating service," Matheny said.

In fact, CTI provides a comprehensive job-search training program with 17 workshops that cover everything from resumes and interview skills to negotiating salaries, Davis said.

"We're the only comprehensive job-search training program in the Columbus area that offers so many services at such a reasonable cost," Matheny said.

The job-search process has changed, even within the last five years, he said.

It is no longer enough simply to list your duties on a resume, Davis said.

Employers expect more, and technology also has changed the job-application process, she said.

In addition to its training programs, the organization offers outplacement services for a fraction of the cost one would normally pay, he said.

CTI is a nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers, many of whom have gone through a mid- or late-career job search themselves and can offer support and encouragement to program participants, Davis said.

"It's a safe place to recharge and remotivate yourself," Matheny said. "We even have a workspace with computers where you can come and work. Sometimes it helps to get away from home."

Visitors are invited to attend a free presentation about issues related to career transition from 9 to 10:30 a.m. each Monday at the CTI office, 1100 King Ave.

The sessions include networking and information about CTI's programs, Matheny said.

Memberships cost $200 for the first two months, during which the training program can be completed. All membership fees and donations are used for operating expenses.

Career Transition Institute's offices are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
